Anti-Oxidants will help Prevent Cancer. Btw, what is an Anti-Oxidant?!

If you read about health you’ve likely seen the word anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants job in our bodies is to collect the free radicals and dispose of them.  Free radicals, including reactive oxygen species, are molecules with one or more unpaired electron. This seems counter intuitive to the average person because oxygen is usually a good thing when its carried from the lungs to every cell. This oxygen is different because it is a byproduct of our metabolic processes. So essentially, it’s part if the garbage of the body. These anti-oxidants are the garbage men that will collect the trash on a daily basis.

What causes oxidative stress in the body?

Oxidative stress is caused by unstable oxygen molecules. But what does that really do to the human body? It can damage cells, protein structures and even DNA (ie. oxidative damage). However, cells also produce antioxidants that neutralize these free radicals. In general, the body is able to maintain a balance between antioxidants and free radicals

Several factors contribute to oxidative stress and excess free radical production including:

  • diet
  • lifestyle
  • certain conditions
  • environmental factors such as pollution and radiation

Cells contain structures called mitochondria, which work as the cells powerhouse to produce energy in the form of something called ATP.

Mitochondria combine oxygen and glucose to produce carbon dioxide, water, and ATP. Free radicals arise as byproducts of this metabolic process.

What else causes oxidative stress?

External substances, such as cigarette smoke, pesticides, and ozone, can also cause the formation of free radicals in the body.

So, why is it important to eat anti-oxidants in our diet?

It’s important to eat foods high in anti-oxidants because they help the body neutralize these free radicals that the body can’t handle which protects the body from oxidative damage. Changes in DNA can lead to many different disease processes. Some chronic diseases oxidative stress can cause include cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Can You Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease?

New research says you have more control than you think.  Like many other disease lifestyle choices play a major role in long-term well being.  This latest research pertains to 5 lifestyle choices that can affect the development of Alzheimer’s Disease.

This is good news that should give you hope if your grandfather/grandmother or other relative have this disease.  The research points specifically to 5 behaviors which affect Alzheimer’s.  Medically speaking, there is no cure or way to halt Alzheimer’s disease so the best we can do is make lifestyle modifications to attempt to prevent or slow the disease process.

So get this, the study says that when you do these 4/5 things you have a 60% less chance of developing plaques on your brain.  Incredible, right?  Hold on to your hats here is the list:

  1. not smoking– duh, more oxygen can now get to the brain!
  2. exercising at a moderate to vigorous level for at least 150 minutes a week.  That’s 3 days of 50-min exercise
  3. consuming a brain supporting diet–  you should do this anyway.  This means you should be eating foods rich in omega-3’s and low in omega-6’s.
  4. lower your alcohol consumption
  5. use your head (crosswords, reading, etc)- if you don’t use it you what?  Lose it!

I found this quote on the http://www.nbcnews.com article pertaining to this topic.  “This reinforces the notion that some of these lifestyle factors may actually affect the trajectory of cognitive aging and the development of dementia,” said Dr. Ronald Petersen, director of the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. “We certainly accept that with heart disease. We need to adopt a similar mindset for cognitive aging.”

If you haven’t heard yet Alzheimer’s is considered type 3 diabetes.  Do you remember how to get type 2 diabetes?  It’s all lifestyle!  Type 1 Diabetes is something most are born with and cannot be reversed, but type 2 can be reversed.  I find it absolutely fascinating that some of the best doctors in the World have a hard time accepting your lifestyle matters for every organ in your body not just your heart.  Stop pretending diseases aren’t connected to our lifestyles.  How you treat your body today will affect your health tomorrow.  This is God’s law.
