What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine is the future of how we treat conditions and disease. Regenerative medicine is the newest branch of medicine which uses biologics to treat conditions and diseases. It’s called regenerative medicine because the goal is to heal and regenerate damage, injured and/or arthritic tissue. The practice of regeneration is done at medical clinics which employ traditional nurse practitioners or medical doctors.

Medicine especially for joints will never be the same since regenerative medicine has been introduced. Previously, those suffering from joint pain, bursitis, tendinitis were getting harmful cortisone injections to rid of inflammation and repeating up to 3-4x’s/year (the FDA cap). You know it is not good for you when the FDA puts a cap on the number of injections you can receive per year. Research suggests that tendons may rupture, cartilage can deteriorate and other complications may occur from receiving just one cortisone injection.

Regenerative medicine involves biologics that innately heal the body without being synthetically altered in a lab preventing it from being a pharmaceutical drug.  There are a few choices when it comes to determining which regenerative therapy may be right for you.

In our clinic, the team meets to determine the best intervention for the individual. Our protocols are unique. We have developed a system of delivery and instruction which gives the patient a better chance at repairing the joint(s). We often give pre and post injection instructions, perform follow-ups, incorporate some form of physical medicine (like chiropractic or physical therapy), weight loss, BioTE, supplements or other.

We really do curtail our care to the individual. If you are a local patient we may incorporate more physical medicine in your protocol than someone who travels from a nearby state. However, we might make a recommendation for an out-of-towner to find a specific healthcare provider. We often help to find the right type of provider that will be a great fit for you.

Within regenerative medicine there are a few different modalities which are listed below. Joint pain, swelling, ligament tears, tendinitis, bursitis issues do well with stem cell therapy. There are other options, but stem cell therapy is typically the gold standard in regenerative medicine.

  1. Stem cell therapy
  2. Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP)
  3. Prolotherapy
  4. Ozone injections

Each of the above regenerative options will be explored in future posts.
